Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) care for people who are sick, injured, convalescent, or disabled under the direction of physicians and registered nurses. The nature of the direction and supervision required varies by state and job setting.
LPNs are generalists and work in a variety of health care settings. They are often found working under the supervision of physicians in clinics, long-term care, assisted living, skilled nursing facilities, or in home health care.

How do I apply to the Practical Nursing program? To apply to the Practical Nursing program at 腦瞳憫, follow these steps:
1. Apply to 腦瞳憫
If you haven't attended in two major semesters or longer, you will first need to reapply for general admission to DSC.
2. Submit Official Transcripts
High school, GED, and/or college transcripts must be sent to the Admissions Office and received before submitted your practical nursing application.
3. Apply for Financial Aid (optional)
If you plan to seek financial assistance, apply early.
4. Meet the Age Requirement
You must be at least 18 years old by the start of the academic term.
5. Complete College Orientation
All new students must complete online college orientation.
6. Take the AE-CASAS Placement Test (Unless Exempt)
You must take the AE-CASAS Reading and Math test unless you meet exemption criteria (e.g., ENC1101 and MAT1033 with a C or better, valid PERT/SAT/ACT scores, Florida public high school graduates post-2003, or active-duty military).
Meet with an academic advisor to interpret your scores.
7. Take the TEAS Test
- Must be taken in person at a 腦瞳憫 campus (not online or at other institutions).
- You may test up to four times per calendar year.
- Scores are valid for three years and must meet the 65th percentile or higher on the Adjusted Individual Total Score (AITS).
8. Prepare Application Materials
- Have a copy of your TEAS test results ready to upload with your application.
9. Meet with Academic Advising (Highly Recommended)
- Before submitting your Practical Nursing application, it is strongly recommended that you meet with an Academic Advisor to ensure you meet all eligibility requirements and that your application materials are complete and accurate.
10. Submit Your Application
During the May application window, submit your online limited access application.
11. GPA Requirement
You must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00. Courses in progress without final grades are not considered.
12. Wait for Your Decision Letter
Letters are typically sent about six weeks after the application period closes.
13. Final Acceptance Requirements
Acceptance is provisional until you:
- Complete a physical exam
- Pass a drug screening
- Clear a Level II background check (FDLE/FBI)

How are applicants selected for the Practical Nursing program? Applicants are ranked based on academic standing and placed into one of four categories. Placement in a category does not guarantee admission.
What are the selection categories?
Category 1
- Completed all required nursing prerequisites
- Cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher
- Graduate of DSC Nursing Assistant Program or proof of CNA work experience
Category 2
- Completed all required nursing prerequisites
- Cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher
Category 3
- Completed all required nursing prerequisites
- Cumulative GPA between 2.50 and 2.99
- Overall GPA must be at least 2.00
Category 4
- Applicants with outstanding prerequisite courses, prioritized in this order:
- College Composition (ENC1101)
- Intermediate Algebra (MAT1033)
- Introduction to Healthcare (HSC1000)
- Basic Anatomy and Physiology for Health Careers (BSC0070 or BSC1080)
How is priority determined within each category?
Applicants are ranked based on:
- Completion of prerequisite courses
- Cumulative GPA at time of application
- TEAS composite score
- Completion of DSC Nursing Assistant Program or verified CNA work experience
What grade is required for nursing courses and prerequisites?
All program pre- and co-requisites and nursing courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.
